Eric's Online Diary: Solving some family history mysteries

1. ?His birth and death registrations show his name only as Richard Little, so why during his lifetime does he use the middle name of Gibson? His army records and medals from the First World War also show him as Richard Gibson Little.

2. ?Did the name Gibson come from the maiden name of his first wife? This was a story I?d heard from my mother and may have passed on to Mike. The story was that he?d fallen in love with and married the daughter of a family of wealthy shopkeepers from Carlisle. They had disapproved and when the woman died in childbirth, he?d left Cumberland and gone to fight in France, taking her maiden name as his middle name. A similar story, with variances was told by my uncle, Dick Little.

3. ?Who were Richard?s parents? Was his father called Joseph? Online research had not been helpful, creating more questions and no answers.

4. ?Did a maiden aunt bring him up after his mother was said to have died three or four years after his birth?

5. ?On Richard?s death, it was said there was a ?father? who declined through solicitors, to take responsibility of Richard?s children who remained in Stanley House, the orphanage?

6. ?Richard?s ?father? was said to have moved to Cheshire, remarried and had two sons with his second wife.

7. ?Richard's second wife, my grandmother Nelly Beatrice Burrows, descended from a Scottish connection.

Mike has been interested in family history for some years and is quite experienced, so I was pleased that he took on the task of trying to find out the truth. His research started with Richard?s death, which is always a sobering event.

The Death Certificate shows he died of Broncho Pneumonia on 15 December 1937 at Springwell House, Doncaster Urban District, aged 49. ?At the time he was living at Village Street, Adwick-le-Street about five miles north-west of Doncaster. By researching the web site www.workhouses.org.uk/Doncaster/ it seems Springwell House built in 1897 in Balby, had been the local Workhouse and it doesn't sound a good place to be. ?A quote from this web site says:

?After the Local Government Act, 1929 abolished the Poor Law Guardians from 1 April 1930, responsibility for public assistance, and the former workhouse, fell upon Doncaster County Borough Council. The council renamed the premises Springwell House Public Assistance Institution. The buildings continued to function as a local authority hospital and provide accommodation for the destitute and for those who in the language of the period were classed as 'mentally deficient'. Initially, because of the 'poor quality of the accommodation' it was proposed not to adopt Springwell House as a hospital within the National Health Service. However, in the event the premises were taken over by the NHS and were designated as the Western Hospital in 1950. The hospital was used mostly for maternity and geriatric patients. It was demolished in 1974 and the site redeveloped for a primary school and private housing.?

Consequently, we can reasonably assume that Richard was a patient at Springwell House due to the medical condition from which he subsequently died.

The death certificate records his age as 49, suggesting a birth in 1888. ?As the family indicated that Richard was born in Cumberland, a search of the Birth Records enabled Mike to obtain a birth certificate in the name of Richard Little born 9 April 1888, a date that matches the family-quoted date.

This certificate records the birth at Ruckcroft, near Ainstable, a small hamlet to the north-east of Penrith, his mother being Margaret Little (nee Lowis), a charwoman, who appears to be illiterate as she had to make her ?mark? in completing the registration.

No father?s name is shown on the certificate with the space provided being struck out. ?At the end of the 19th century this action by the Registrar generally indicated that the father was unknown or that the mother was not prepared to declare it and, therefore, Richard seems to have been illegitimate.

Mike then began tracing Richard in the census records available within his lifetime, with the following results:

1891 ? shown as Richard G [suggesting he was already named Gibson] aged two; a nurse child; living at Cross House, Becks, Ainstable with Anthony and Mary Sander. ?

Initial research did not produce any firm connection between the Sanders and Margaret Little (nee Lowis) other than Anthony Sanders being the son of Joseph Sander, Registrar, who registered Margaret?s birth. Becks is within a mile of Richard?s place of birth and west and south of Ruckcroft.

1901 ? shown again as ?Richard G? aged 12, this time living as son with Joseph and Margaret Barnes at Ruckcroft. ?Joseph was an agricultural labourer but in later life became a corn miller. Joseph?s parents, and eventually Joseph, were millers at Dale Mill, Ainstable.

1911 ? Richard cannot be found with or without his G, but would have been 22 years old. He served in the Great War with the York and Lancaster regiment which mainly recruited from the south Yorkshire (Hallamshire) area, so he may have moved there for reasons of work. Easy for a single man to slip through the census.

Turning back to the 1901 census, Mike researched the Barnes family and found that Margaret, Joseph?s wife, was Margaret Little on their marriage certificate. She was shown as a widow and her father as Henry Lowis. Was Margaret Barnes, the same person as Margaret Little, nee Lowis, the mother of Richard? Had she not died as the family thought and had she taken him back into her care once she had a secure station in life?

Mike needed to establish the real connection between Margaret Little/Lowis and Joseph Barnes, so he searched Cumberland Records for marriages of a Margaret Lowis (and alternatives such as Lewis and Lowes) and found a marriage to a John Little in 1871. In the 1881 census, Margaret and John were living at Castle Dyke, Ainstable, with their sons Henry Lowes Little (b.1871) and John Richard Little (b.1879). The census entry immediately prior to this family was that of a Henry and Jane Lowis. Tracing Henry and Jane back through the census records confirms that Margaret was their daughter, as did a copy of her birth certificate giving her birth as 11 April 1851 to parents of Henry Lowis and Jane Lowis (nee Gibson).

To get closer to the Lowis/Little connection, in June 2012 Mike spent three days visiting the Carlisle Archives to examine specific Parish Records and found baptism records for Margaret (8 February 1858 at Ainstable ie seven years after her birth) and most of her nine siblings. In addition, he found Parish Records confirming her two marriages to John Little (11 Nov 1871) and Joseph Barnes (28 Oct 1891). ?Both men were shown as bachelors and Margaret Little as widow when she married Barnes. The 1911 census shows there were no children to this marriage.

So it looked as if Richard was the son of John Little and Margaret (Lowis, Little, Barnes), explaining his surname and with the Gibson connection coming from Margaret?s mother?s maiden name. Margaret was clearly quite keen to keep her family's female surnames in memory because she?d used her own maiden name as the middle name for her first child. Her husband John had died, Richard was cared for by foster parents until Margaret got back on her feet and married again, then he was brought up by his mum and stepfather - all explained (or was it?).

Why was John Little not shown as Richard?s father on his birth certificate and what had happened to her other two sons? Mike subsequently traced John Little?s death to Sleetburn Colliery, Brandon and Byshottles just east of Durham on 8 January 1885 - Richard wasn?t born until April 1888, three years later. John Little could not have been his father. ?

Like a lot of family history trails, this one was throwing up as many questions as answers.

One thing that is an obvious change in social history in the second half of the 19th Century is that people were far more mobile. One of my great grandparents moved from rural Norfolk to the bustle of Liverpool, another moved from Norfolk to East Yorkshire; there was emigration to Canada and there was migration to London. People that had worked on the land for generations were being pushed off by mechanisation and they were also able to earn better wages by working in industry.

The fact that John and Margaret Little moved across the Pennines from near Penrith to Durham is not such a big leap. Durham was a thriving coal-mining area and would be hungry for workers. The connection with Durham seems to have come about because Margaret?s younger sister, Sarah, married John Healey and they moved to Co Durham where John Healey worked in the mines. I guess Margaret and John heard there was good money to be earned and followed them.

So, upon Richard?s birth in 1888, Margaret had been a widow for more than three years. We know she was working as a charwoman (cleaner) and Mike was able to confirm that her two sons Henry and John were living with their father?s family.

Mike has not been able to find a baptism record for Richard. He has also searched the official Bastardy Records for the period to see who may have taken financial responsibility for Richard until Margaret married Joseph Barnes, but these did not extend beyond 1874 and so proved fruitless. ?In the April 1891 census he was, of course, being cared for by Anthony and Mary Sander.

So who might Richard?s father have been and what would the Sanders? motive have been for looking after him?

Anthony Sander, who was caring for Richard as a two-year-old in 1891, was the son of Joseph Sander b.1802. In the 1851 census, this Joseph Sander shows as farmer of 65 acres and also a Registrar of Births and Deaths, living at The Vicarage, Ainstable with his wife Ann, a daughter and four sons, including Anthony (b.1831) and another called Joseph (b.1836) in Ainstable. Anthony married Mary and they also had a son called Joseph b.1867 in Ainstable.

You will recall that family lore states that Richard?s father was called Joseph, which may have been Joseph Barnes (his stepfather) but there are now a few other Josephs who have stepped into the limelight. Could either the son or grandson of the original Joseph Sander, both also called Joseph, be Richard?s father?

The first Joseph (b.1836) can be discounted as he died in 1869.

Anthony?s son, Joseph (b.1867) left home between 1881 and 1891 moving to Benwell, north of Gateshead, to become a crane driver. He was living with Richard Pearson and his family who had all been born in Ainstable and this was probably the connection that took him there. By the 1901 census, he had moved to Newcastle upon Tyne, become a Bank Porter and married Jane Chalder in 1893. ?She came from Alston near to Ainstable. In the 1911 census the family were still in Newcastle and Joseph was now a Bank Messenger.

The question is whether this Joseph was Richard?s natural father. This can only be answered if the Sander family can be traced and they have the knowledge.?He was certainly of an age to have been the father and the connection of Ainstable between Joseph and Margaret is clear. ?Further, it could be possible that Joseph?s parents, Anthony and Mary, cared for Richard as a ?family? son as Margaret was unable to provide financially for Richard.

This seems a good explanation of why Anthony and Mary Sander were looking after Richard. Perhaps Margaret returned to Ainstable from Durham a widow with two sons. The Little family took in the sons and Sanders offered her some cleaning work where she caught the eye of young Joseph ...

Perhaps a deal was struck by the grandparents to help Margaret out in return for keeping their son?s name ?guilt free??

Joseph Sander, who may have been my great grandfather (there?s no proof, but some circumstantial evidence) died in 1932 aged 65.

After the 1901 census, there?s no trace of Richard Gibson Little (my grandfather) until he pops up as a soldier in the Great War. The regiment he joins is a small one which recruited from a distinct area and so it?s quite likely that he?d gone to South Yorkshire seeking work and had joined up soon after the outbreak of war. He?d been wounded and sent home for a spell. He seems to have gone ?home? to Cumberland, met Annie Elizabeth Braithwaite and married her on 20 September 1917 at Ousby ? a village south-east of Ruckcroft and Ainstable. ?

There is no father?s name shown on this marriage certificate, suggesting that Richard was illegitimate. Clearly, Richard did not take the name Gibson from Annie but certainly from his grandmother, Jane Lowis, whose maiden name was Gibson. ?Sadly, the story about his first love dying was true as Annie died on 9 November 1919 during childbirth and there is no reference of the child surviving ? it was not made compulsory to register a stillbirth until 1927. ?My Aunt Margaret (Margaret Smith) has the prayer book given to Annie on her confirmation on 12 May 1910 by the Rector at Ousby.

Richard also shows himself as Gibson on his second marriage, to my grandmother Nelly Beatrice Burrows. ?Nelly?s birth certificate shows she was born on 6 Apr 1894 at Low Catton, Pocklington, east of York. ?Her father and his family come from Burston, Norfolk and her mother?s family are East Yorkshire based (both well documented), so no Scottish connection here.

Richard?s marriage certificate to Nelly records his father as Joseph Little. This is most likely to be his late stepfather Joseph Barnes. Mike thinks that Richard gave the name Joseph and occupation miller to the Rector and he had incorrectly written his name as Joseph Little instead of Joseph Barnes. Joseph had, of course, taken responsibility for and acted as Richard?s father following his marriage to Margaret, so he deserved some credit. Probably, no attempt was made to correct the mistake as Richard had other things on his mind (it was his wedding day) and both Joseph Barnes and his mother Margaret had died a few years earlier.

The question of Joseph Barnes being quoted as ?father? in official documents such as the census, is common during the 19th and early 20th centuries when viewed in the light of second marriages by one partner; i.e. Margaret ? Joseph was a bachelor on marriage to Margaret.?Margaret died of Stomach Cancer on the 30 May 1916 at Ousby Mill, Ousby, as the widow of Joseph Barnes, corn miller ? Joseph had died in early 1915 in Ousby. ?Mike visited St Luke?s Church, Ousby and with the help of a graveyard plan in the church, found and photographed the adjacent sites of Margaret and Joseph?s graves although no headstones are erected.

Sadly, after Nelly?s death in 1933 (at the age of 39), all of their children, except John, were taken into Stanley House Children?s Home run by Doncaster Council. ?Upon Richard?s death in 1937 family lore states that a ?father? (grandfather) had declined to take responsibility for the children. Who might have turned their back on the family?

The only father figure still living at Richard?s death was John Burrows, Nelly?s father and the children?s grandfather. At this time he was 76 years old, a widower, and understandably unlikely to be willing (or able) to take in the children. He died in Doncaster in 1940.

So where has this research left those family mysteries?

Mike has established:

? ?Richard was illegitimate, with no natural father established. He clearly was given the name Gibson from his grandmother, Jane Lowis (nee Gibson).

? ?His mother was Margaret Lowis born 1851; died 1916 who married John Little (died 1885) and later married Joseph Barnes with whom she brought up her son.

? ?Richard?s natural father cannot be determined and, whilst I am happy to point the finger at Joseph Sander, Mike thinks it is unlikely. He thinks that if this was the case Margaret and Joseph would have married before or shortly after Richard?s birth as, being single, neither had any reason not to do so. Bearing in mind that Joseph?s grandfather was the local Registrar, a man of standing in the community, to legitimise the birth would have been a priority. Of course, this doesn?t explain why the Sanders looked after Richard as a young child.

? ?If Joseph Barnes was the natural father the same argument (no restrictions on marrying) hold good, so why wait three years. Based on Richard and Nelly?s marriage certificate it was Joseph Barnes who family lore believe to be Joseph Little, father of Richard. This is supported by the father?s occupation being shown as miller on the certificate.

? ?Nelly Burrows was certainly not Scottish - her family roots are deep in Norfolk and Yorkshire.

? ?The question of a father moving to Cheshire can be discounted.

? ?There was no maiden aunt and Richard?s mother did not die until much later when he was an adult. Perhaps the Sanders were the maiden aunt?

If you?ve stuck with this posting to the bitter end, well done. Some family history research provides rollicking good stories like the frontiersman Zachariah Burrows, other stories are rather more forensic. Thanks again to Mike Towers for his diligence - this was a complicated one to unravel and there remains just enough uncertainty to keep that murky air of mystery that has made Richard Gibson Little so intriguing to us all.

If anyone wants access to the family tree just mail me and if anyone knows who my great grandfather really was then I?d love to know!

Healthy Crock Pot Recipes and Slow Cooker Recipes - Food

For folks on low-glycemic diet plans, vegetarians, or anyone who would like to eat healthier, there are a variety of different vegetarian and other healthy crock pot recipes which are delicious and convenient. The beauty of these meals is that you can prepare them in the morning, (or even the night before), throw them into the slow cooker, set it and forget it until lunch or dinner time.

Crock pot recipes are perfect for folks who work during the day, or who have other commitments such as child care or errands to run. In the past, healthy crock pot meals were few and far between as most crock pot recipes included meats high in fat as well as the addition of sugar and salt. Thankfully, slow cooker recipes have come a long way. Healthy slow cooker recipes often include leaner cuts of meat, (or no meat), and a variety of beans and vegetables. Barley, lentils, and dal are also great inclusions to crock pot meals as are a variety of different mushrooms, (especially for vegetarian or vegan dishes).

Coconut milk can be a great substitute for cream or whole milk and a variety of spices can help replace the salt of other crock pot recipes. For households where one or both parents work, these type of meals allow them to prepare healthy, delicious food for their families, with the ease of standard slow cooker recipes.

And for folks who are on low-glycemic or low-carb diets, healthy slow cooker recipes and often much needed break from the low-fat cheese, chicken breasts, and nuts they eat most of the time. Rather than bread, potatoes, or pasta, whole grain rice is often a great accompaniment for a variety of different recipes including Asian inspired dishes such as beef and snow peas. If you do decide to serve pasta with your crock pot meals, opt for whole wheat pasta rather than highly process white pastas.

With summer quickly approaching, healthy crock pot recipes are the perfect way to escape hours hovering around the stove or oven. Just throw in the ingredients of the healthy crock pot meal, turn it on, and go outside to enjoy summer while your dinner cooks itself. Many crock pot recipes even use super convenient food such as canned vegetables and condensed soups, making them even faster to prepare.

Of course, whenever possible, healthy crock pot meals should include fresh vegetables or a salad on the side.

5 Reasons Not to Hire a Coach - wise self improvement | self ...

Planning to hire a coach?

From time to time, managers and advisors consider the option of hiring a performance, business, or referral coach. Unless the conditions are right, an investment in coaching can be a waste of money. So, in this article we will discuss when you should hire a coach?

? When not to hire a coach

1. When the advisor or manager is unclear on what he or she wants to accomplish. Without clear objectives, you can't determine which coach or if coaching process is a good fit. Before considering a performance coach, identify specifically the areas you want to strengthen. Then prioritize those in the order of potential payback.

2. When you are in the middle of an intensive skill-building program from the home, office or other source. You can't effectively execute several initiatives at the same time. Advisors, who are in the first year or two in a new career and involved in an intensive training program, should look first to maximize what is being offered by the program.

3. When you are undergoing significant personal change or trauma. If your family member is facing a serious medical challenge or dealing with an issue like divorce, it is extremely difficult to focus your energies on making habit or systems changes in your business. Implementing change and driving business growth require focus and energy. A performance or business coach is not the right resource during times of personal trauma. At these times, a psychologist or family counselor is a better fit.

4. "To fix your business" or to "fix the advisor". No coach can force an advisor to make changes. No one coaching organization is the 'total' answer. The advisor needs to approach the coach with a sincere desire to improve, a willingness to change, and a commitment to address specific skills or business areas.

5. While looking for a miracle to save a sinking career. Coaches are not miracle workers. Some coaches have strong processes and systems that can upgrade performance. They can teach skills and help develop effective marketing strategies. However, coaches can not save someone who is not a good fit for the business.

? When hiring a coach can be profitable?

1. When you (or your advisor) are clear about the areas you want to strengthen. At this point, you (or the advisor) can better assess which coaching process and organization is a good fit for your needs.

2. When you are ready to make a commitment to upgrade. Timing is a legitimate factor. To get maximum value from a development process, you must be ready to commit time and energy - not just money.

3. When you feel that the coach's process fits how you learn and change. If you are a person who prefers to implement things one-step-at-a-time, do not select a boot camp program where you attend for several days and then you are left on your own to execute. If on-going accountability is helpful to you, select a coaching process with frequent meetings on a regular schedule.

4. When you want specific expertise in a priority skill or business area (e.g. get referrals, increase marketing effectiveness, selling skills or technology)

5. When your skills or results are not improving at the rate you desire.

6. When you feel a need for accountability beyond that available in your organization

7. When you want an independent assessment of your business or skills or feel the need for a different perspective than what is offered internally.

Richmond, VA? ?? Blair Nelsen, President of the Nelsen Funeral Homes of Richmond, Ashland and Williamsburg, VA. and the Cremation Society of Virginia in Richmond, Charlottesville and Chantilly, VA. has announced the merger of his family business with Service Corp International (SCI).? Johnson Consulting Group (JCG), the death care industry leader in merger and acquisition, was instrumental in accomplishing the merger as the firm represented both buyer and seller.

?When making a decision of this gravity, an owner has various and diverse objectives, many of which hold equal importance.? Certainly the financial future of my immediate family, which includes siblings, is very important; but also is the future of the business my family invested over a century in creating.? I want to know the community will be well served and that the Nelsen name will continue to be respected.? Also important is the future of the over 100 associates that have invested their time and energies in building this business.? When I considered all of these priorities with the assistance of Tom and Jake Johnson and their team of professionals, it became apparent SCI represented the best all around choice.?

According to Jake Johnson, ?The Nelsen family businesses represent a perfect fit with SCI as it represents a merger of two high quality organizations.? Mr. Blair Nelsen has gained a national reputation as one of the death care industry?s more innovative operators.? As a result, Mr. Nelsen more than quadrupled his 120 year family business during the 20 years under his leadership.?

?Contrary to what many people might expect, mergers and acquisitions is not just a matter of money changing hands.? If that?s all there was to it, there would be no need for specialists such as JCG.?? Tom Johnson, JCG Chairman.? ?When working with buyers and sellers, it?s as much a matching of corporate cultures and individual personalities as it is arriving at a mutually acceptable dollar figure.? JCG has gained our position in the death care industry not by just making deals, but by creating long term successful mergers where each side emerges successfully, both on the short term and the long term.?

Mr. Nelsen will remain with SCI in staff and advisory roles, applying his accumulated knowledge in building a successful cremation society business by accepting a position on the Neptune Society Board, and working with SCI?s legislative awareness team by influencing the development of state and national legislation that will positively impact the death care industry as a whole.

Looking for assistance

Hello everyone, I am trying to find a surname(a last name) for an elf of a druidic nature. His ideas are not that of standard druid. He believes in balance but in a slightly different sense.

The basis of his philosophy is similar to the following:

"The essence of balance is detachment. To embrace a cause, to grow fond or spiteful, is to lose one's balance, after which, no action can be trusted."

"Beware, for even the simple act of desiring to become...can corrupt that which will be."

"Imagine the world as a youth precariously balanced on the precipice of a deep ravine. We are their safety net."

"The struggles between the nations mirror the tidal wave and flow of the vast ocean. No tide must ever be allowed to advance unchecked..."

"Their religious belief that eradicating these people's lives is truly the work of benevolence would inevitable disrupt the balance. Foolishly blinded by the greater evils of fear, hate, and prejudice, simply wrapping them in a cloak of righteousness and sending them to their death while wielding them as their pawns."

The first name is Malorin but the last name I want it to be similar to a simple two words. For instance, other druid names maybe something like: Briarstorm or Treestrider. I can't find the proper wording that directly meets this "balance".

Any roleplayers that could assist me with this?

Thank you for reading.

Grid-Tied Tornado Power: Taking the Energy Industry by Storm

Canadian engineer Louis Michaud has an idea that could blow the wind industry wide open. He wants to harness the power of a manmade tornado and tie it to the grid.

That?s the sort of innovation that PayPal?s?(News - Alert) prosperous founder, Peter Thiel, intends to buy into. His philanthropic group, the San Francisco-based Thiel Foundation, just awarded Michaud $300,000 to build a prototype of a machine that can create ?mini? tornadoes. In any other context, that would mean ?towering,? because each twister will be about 120 feet tall.

The money will come from the foundation's Breakout Labs program?which was launched in November 2011, in order to help early stage companies to ?advance their most radical ideas.? Indeed, according to Thiel?s website, Breakout Labs steps in where more timid souls fear to tread: ?Venture capital firms want research that can be quickly brought to market, and federal funding offers little room for risky, unproven ideas. We are jumping into this funding gap to energize innovative research.?

Michaud is ready to go. His company, Sarnia, Ontario-based AVEtec (an acronym for Atmospheric Vortec Engine technology) proposes to harnesses the physics of tornadoes to produce extremely cheap and clean energy. In his design, warm or humid air is introduced into a circular station, where it takes the form of a rising vortex, or a controlled tornado. The temperature difference between this heated air and the atmosphere above it supports the vortex and drives multiple turbines. The vortex can be shut down at any time by turning off the source of warm air.

Among its advantages over other sources of energy, AVE power generation neither produces carbon emissions nor needs energy storage. AVEtec projects that the cost of the energy it generates could be as low as 3 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh), making it one of the least expensive forms of energy production. An AVE power station could have a diameter of 300 feet and generate 200 megawatts of electrical power, the same order of magnitude as conventional coal power stations.

?The power in a tornado is undisputed,? said Michaud. ?My work has established the principles by which we can control and exploit that power to provide clean energy on an unprecedented scale. With the funding from Breakout Labs, we are building a prototype in partnership with [Sarnia-based] Lambton College to demonstrate the feasibility and the safety of the atmospheric vortex engine.??

To date, Breakout Labs has awarded one dozen grants of up to $350,000 each. Breakout Labs accepts and funds proposals on a rolling basis. ?Our ? grant recipients? are vastly different in their technologies, company strategies, and goals,? said Breakout Labs Executive Director Lindy Fishburne. ?What unites them is ground-breaking science coupled with the passion, vision, and creativity of their founders. We are delighted to bring them into the Breakout Labs community.?

Previous grants, announced earlier in the year, have been awarded to companies working on cultured meat, biomarker detection, brain reconstruction, reversible cryopreservation, human cell re-engineering, universal airborne contaminant detection, artificial protein therapeutics, and antimatter-based fuel.

?The world faces enormous challenges?resource scarcity, aging populations, economic mismanagement?and we need more visionary scientists and engineers like those at Breakout Labs making authentic discoveries and bringing world-changing products to market,? said Thiel Foundation President Jonathan Cain. ?We hope Breakout Labs inspires more investors to fund real innovation; more young people to pursue technology and entrepreneurship; and more nonprofits to foster risky, radical ideas.?

Israel pushes ahead with plan to build in East Jerusalem

Israel on Monday advanced a project to build hundreds of homes in East Jerusalem, pushing ahead with plans for a surge of settlement building on occupied land in response to a successful Palestinian bid to gain limited recognition of statehood at the United Nations.

The settlement expansion plans have drawn condemnations from Washington and from European nations, some of which have summoned Israeli ambassadors to lodge formal protests. But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is running in elections next month, has defied the calls to rescind the building plans.

A spokeswoman for Israel's Interior Ministry said Monday that a planning committee had approved another stage in plans for construction of 1,500 homes in Ramat Shlomo, an ultra-Orthodox neighborhood built on West Bank land annexed to Jerusalem after Israel captured the area in the 1967 Middle East war.

The plans caused a diplomatic flap when they were announced during Vice President Joe Biden's visit in 2010, drawing swift condemnation from him and straining Israel's ties with Washington. Further steps to promote the plan were suspended, but it has been reactivated after the vote at the U.N. General Assembly last month to upgrade the Palestinians' status to a non-member observer state.

The Interior Ministry spokeswoman said that final approval of the plan could take months to years, and that a similar housing development in another part of East Jerusalem was expected to be discussed by the planning panel on Tuesday. That project, known as Givat Hamatos, would extend a belt of Israeli neighborhoods on annexed land on Jerusalem's southern outskirts, further separating the city's Arab neighborhoods from the West Bank.

After the U.N. vote, Netanyahu approved the construction of 3,000 homes in West Bank settlements and in East Jerusalem, and the advancement of plans for a settlement corridor east of Jerusalem that is seen as critically damaging prospects for a territorially contiguous Palestinian state.

Mark Regev, a spokesman for Netanyahu, said the building plans approved Monday were simply "another procedural phase" in a process that "would've happened anyway," regardless of the recently announced settlement building drive.

But Nabil Abu Rudeineh, a spokesman for Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, called the latest Israeli step "a flagrant defiance of the will of the entire international community."

Israel's continued expansion of settlements is at the core of the current impasse in peace efforts. The Palestinians, who seek a state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip with a capital in East Jerusalem, have refused to resume negotiations with Israel unless it halts settlement building on occupied land.

Netanyahu has called for a return to talks without preconditions, arguing that all key issues in dispute, including the settlements, could be discussed in the negotiations. He has condemned the Palestinians' U.N. statehood bid as an attempt to bypass such talks.

Epson WorkForce WF-2540

The Epson WorkForce WF-2540 multi-function printer (MFP) is almost identical in most ways to the Epson WorkForce WF-2530 that I recently reviewed. Both models are best understood as personal MFPs for any size office and both offer essentially the same size, speed, and output quality. However the WF-2540 adds a few key features, most notably an Ethernet connector as an alternative to the Wi-Fi that both printers offer. For those who prefer the extra security and reliability of wired network connectivity, that alone makes it well worth the small additional cost.

In addition to the Ethernet connector, the WF-2540 adds a larger, more readable LCD, at 2.5 inches, for the control panel menus and a USB A connector on the front of the printer to let you scan directly to, but not print from, USB memory keys. Beyond that, however, there are few, if any, differences between the two models.

As with the Epson WF-2530, the WF-2540's footprint is only 15.4 by 14.8 inches not including the front output tray, making it small enough to fit comfortably on your desk. More important, it shares the Epson WF-2530's focus on office-related, rather than home-oriented, features. That's not to say that it can't serve in the dual role of home and home-office printer. However, you won't find features like support for printing directly from PictBridge cameras, which you might expect in a home printer.

The Basics
Core MFP features in the WF-2540 include the ability to print and fax from a PC, scan to a PC, and work as a standalone copier and fax machine. Office-oriented features include a 30-page automatic document feeder, which supplements a letter-size flatbed to let you scan multipage documents and legal-size paper easily,

For printing, the WF-2540 offers only a 100-sheet paper capacity and no duplexer (for automatic printing on both sides of the page). This limited paper handling is the main reason the printer is best reserved for one person's use, at least in an office. You can certainly share it on a network easily enough. But unless no one in your office prints very much, you'll have to refill it with paper more often than most people would want to.

Also worth mention is that the WF-2540 allows printing through the cloud and printing with Apple AirPrint. Note, however, that AirPrint requires a Wi-Fi access point on your network, which you may not have if you've chosen to use the Ethernet or USB connection. In addition, both AirPrint and cloud printing require setting up the printer with a wired or wireless network connection.

Setup, Speed, and Output Quality
Setting up the WF-2540 on a wired network was absolutely typical, both for the physical setup and for installing the drivers and other software on the Windows Vista system I tested with.

Epson WorkForce WF-2540

As with the WF-2530, the WF-2540's speed and output quality are both acceptable but unimpressive. On our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing), the WF-2540 tied the WF-2530 at an effective 2.6 pages per minute (ppm). That makes it significantly slower than either the less expensive Editors' Choice Brother MFC-J430w below, at 4.3 ppm, or the more expensive Editors' Choice Brother MFC-J825DW above, at 4.0 ppm.

For photos, all of these printers were slower than most inkjets, with the WF-2540 essentially tying the WF-2530 for last place, at 2 minutes 16 seconds.

Output quality is another area where the WF-2540 is a close match to the Epson WF-2530. Text quality falls at the low end of a fairly tight range that includes the vast majority of inkjets. It's more than acceptable for most business use like correspondence and reports, but not suitable if you need top quality text, or just have a demanding eye.

Graphics are more than good enough for internal business use, but you may not consider them good enough for PowerPoint handouts or the like depending on how much of a perfectionist you are. Photo quality is easily good enough for business materials with photos, and even for home use with most photos. However, colors in one photo were a little off in my tests, putting the printer in the same league as the low end of what you can expect from drugstore prints.

Thanks largely to its Ethernet connector and ability to scan to a USB key, the Epson WF-2540 is a more attractive choice for the price than the Epson WF-2530. If you don't need those features, you can save some money by getting the Epson WF-2530, or, better yet, the Brother MFC-J430w, with its faster speed. Similarly, if you need those features but speed is a key consideration too, you'll be better off with the Brother MFC-J825DW, which will also give you duplex printing. If you don't need duplexing, however, and don't need the extra speed, the Epson WF-2540 is a more than reasonable choice that can certainly do the job.

Homemade Pasta at Campo De Fiori ? Cooking up a Storm, Dish by ...

After months of planning, we finally made it!

In this case, our mission was to get us all together for dinner one night after our cooking class with Pelusa Molina. In celebration of us finishing our year-long cooking course, and with the aim of gathering together over good food and great company, a small group of us finally made it this week.

You see, the great thing about learning new activities such as painting and cooking, on top of acquiring a life-long skill, are the friendships that invariably come along.

Interacting week after week with like-minded acquaintances, these people inevitably become a part of your life, and whose trust and friendship you eventually gain. That?s precisely what happened with Agostina, Sonia, Valeria and Silvana.

I?d been looking forward to dinner with my cooking classmates since we started planning it.

The original date was set for? last Thursday night, but due to an unwelcome storm and accompanying hailstones, we had to cancel dinner last week and postponed it to this week. Because most of my classmates live very, very far away from the venue of our cooking class, we decided that the best option was to meet directly after class and dine at a restaurant nearby, so all of us would be able to make it.

Over huge plates of amazingly delicious homemade pasta and a long, intimate chat, we sat, ate, bonded, laughed and had a wonderful time at Campo de Fiori, an Italian restaurant specialing in homemade pasta.?

I know that pasta is extremely commonplace and is considered cheap ?student food? all over the world, a quick meal at usually low costs. But how much do we actually know about pasta?

What is pasta?

According to Wikipedia, pasta is a type of noodle and is a staple food of traditional Italian cuisine, with the first reference dating to 1154. It is also commonly used to refer to the variety of pasta dishes. Typically pasta is made from unleavened dough of durum wheat flour mixed with water and formed into sheets or various shapes, then cooked and served in any number of dishes. It can be made with flour from other cereals or grains, and eggs may be used instead of water. Pastas may be divided into two broad categories, dried (?pasta secca?) and fresh (?pasta fresco?). Chicken eggs frequently dominate as the source of the liquid component in fresh pasta.

Dried versus Fresh Pasta

Most dried pasta is commercially produced via an extrusion process. Fresh pasta was traditionally produced by hand, sometimes with the aid of simple machines, but today many varieties of fresh pasta are also commercially produced by large scale machines, and the products are broadly available in supermarkets.

Shapes & Varieties of Pasta

Wikipedia also tells us that both dried and fresh pasta come in a number of shapes and varieties, with 310 specific forms known variably by over 1300 names having been recently documented. In Italy the names of specific pasta shapes or types often vary with locale. For example the form ?cavatelli? is known by 28 different names depending on region and town. Common forms of pasta include long shapes, short shapes, tubes, flat shapes and sheets, miniature soup shapes, filled or stuffed, and specialty or decorative shapes. Here?s Wikipedia?s list of pasta if you?d like to see the types available globally.

A very versatile food..

Pasta is generally a simple dish, but comes in large varieties because it is a versatile food item. Some pasta dishes are served as a first course in Italy because the portion sizes are small and simple. The servings are usually accompanied by a side of meat. Pasta is also prepared in light lunches, such as salads or large portion sizes for dinner. It can be prepared by hand or food processor and served hot or cold. Pasta sauces vary in taste, color and texture. When choosing which type of pasta and sauce to serve together, there is a general rule that must be observed. Simple sauces like pesto are ideal for long and thin strands of pasta while tomato sauce combines well with thicker pastas. Thicker and chunkier sauces have the better ability to cling onto the holes and cuts of short, tubular, twisted pastas. Sauce should be served equally with its pasta. It is important that the sauce does not overflow the pasta. The extra sauce is left on the plate after all of the pasta is eaten, or wiped clean with bread and eaten as they do in Argentina.

I?m a huge fan of pasta, but usually stick to the traditionally popular types of dried pasta.

Some of my past experiments with pasta include Spring Vegetable & Ham Spaghetti and Stir-Fried Mediterranean-Inspired Mostacholes. However, pasta comes in so many distinct shapes and forms and colors, it?s probably one of the most varied types of food available!

I remember being dumbstruck and gaping in awe at the countless pasta permutations when I visited Venice, Italy, in August 2007. They are truly a sight to behold?

Ok, now that we understand a little bit more about pasta and have seen some of its enormous variety, let?s get back to Campo de Fiori, where a hot plate of stuffed pasta in a mushroom cream sauce is waiting for me!

Campo de Fiori is a franchaise with various branches, and we ended up at the Villa Crespo branch (situated at Julian Alvarez 299, Buenos Aires) mainly out of chance, because the other restaurant that we originally wanted to go to was too full, with a queue that would have lasted at least 30 minutes in waiting.

We finally arrived at Campo de Fiori, after 20 minutes of driving around cluelessly in the Villa Crespo neighborhood that none of us were familiar with, and finally resorting to using the GPS to guide our way.

Thankfully there was no queue, and we sat down at a table by the window, with a red-and-white checkered tablecloth so characteristic of classic Italian restaurants.

The menu, with a typical Italian-looking man on the cover

As we pored over the long list of pasta and accompanying sauces available in the menu, we were stumped for choice.? There were simply too many different types of pasta ? fresh or dried, plain or stuffed ? all with a variety of exotic-sounding names such as Caramelitos, Romanitos, Spaghetti alla chitarra, just to name a few and impress you a little.

After various suggestions from our very kind and patient waiter, I finally decided on which pasta to feast on.

I ended up ordering Romanitos (similar to round gnocchi or sorrentinos stuffed with ham and mozzarella cheese). I was itching for the strong taste of mushrooms and a creamy sauce, which was both very abundantly delivered in the Panna e Funghi sauce, which consisted of onions, garlic, olive oil, parsley, marsala wine, button mushrooms, dried mushrooms and cream.

Once you?ve tried homemade pasta, it?s really difficult (almost impossible) to go back to eating store-bought factory-produced dried pasta.

The texture of well-kneaded, fresh, homemade pasta is the mark of difference; I also personally think that the taste is so much richer, precisely because fresh pasta hasn?t gone through a drying process (and lost its flavor in between).

It was a really good idea to finally try the well-known Campo de Fiori (even though it was completely by chance and unintended), which left us very satisfied and full, for a total of 115 pesos per person (tips included). Although it was slightly expensive for just a plate of pasta and a canned drink, the quality of homemade pasta cannot be denied, and is the precise reason for the price premium.

The best part of all? Bonding together over hushed conversations and tasty food. We?re definitely going to have to do it again, this time with Silvana!

Agents visit Conn. gun shops after school massacre

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) ? While white-steepled churches and President Barack Obama prepared to comfort a grieving town Sunday, federal agents planned to fan out to dozens of gun stores and shooting ranges across Connecticut, chasing leads they hoped would cast light on the life of school shooter Adam Lanza.

Among the questions: Why did his mother, a well-to-do suburban divorcee, keep a cache of high-power weapons in the house? What experience did Lanza have with those guns? And, above all, what set him on a path to shoot and kill 20 children, along with the adults who tried to stop him?

Lanza shot his mother, Nancy Lanza, to death at the home they shared Friday, then drove to Sandy Hook Elementary School in her car with at least three of her guns, forced his way in by breaking a window and opened fire, authorities said. Within minutes, he killed the children, six adults and himself.

All the victims at the school were shot with a rifle, at least some of them up close, and all were apparently shot more than once, Chief Medical Examiner Dr. H. Wayne Carver said. All six adults killed at the school were women. Of the 20 children, eight were boys and 12 were girls.

Asked whether the children suffered, Carver said, "If so, not for very long." Asked how many bullets were fired, Carver said, "I'm lucky if I can tell you how many I found."

Parents identified the children through photos to spare them some shock, Carver said.

The terrible details about the last moments of young innocents emerged as authorities released their names and ages ? the youngest 6 and 7, the oldest 56. They included Ana Marquez-Greene, a little girl who had just moved to Newtown from Canada; Victoria Soto, a 27-year-old teacher who apparently died while trying to hide her pupils; and principal Dawn Hochsprung, who authorities said lunged at the gunman in an attempt to overtake him.

The tragedy has plunged Newtown into mourning and added the picturesque New England community of 27,000 people to the grim map of towns where mass shootings in recent years have periodically reignited the national debate over gun control but led to little change.

Residents and faith leaders were sure to reflect Sunday on the mass shooting and what meaning, if any, to find in it. Obama planned to attend an interfaith vigil ? the fourth time he will have traveled to a city after a mass shooting.

On Saturday, overflow crowds packed St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church. The Rev. Richard Scinto, a deacon, gave a homily.

"In the past 48 hours I've said the phrase 'I don't know' about 1,000 times," he said. "That not knowing has got to be the worst part of this whole thing."

At St. John's Episcopal Church, 54-year-old Donna Denner, an art teacher at an elementary school in nearby Danbury whose classroom was locked down after the shooting, said she feels the same way she did after 9/11 but isn't sure the rest of the country does.

"I don't know if the rest of the country is struggling to understand it the same way we are here," she said. "Life goes on, but you're not the same. Is the rest of the country ? are they going about their regular activities? Is it just another news story to them?"

The rifle used was a Bushmaster .223-caliber, according to an official with knowledge of the investigation who was not authorized to speak about it and talked on condition of anonymity. The gun is commonly seen at competitions and was the type used in the 2002 sniper killings in the Washington, D.C., area. Also found in the school were two handguns, a Glock 10 mm and a Sig Sauer 9 mm.

A law enforcement official said Saturday that authorities were investigating fresh leads that could reveal more about the lead-up to the shooting. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

Ginger Colbrun, spokeswoman for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, said earlier there was no evidence Lanza was involved in gun clubs or had trained for the shooting. When reached later in the day and asked whether that was still true, she said, "We're following any and all leads related to this individual and firearms."

Dean Price, director of the Wooster Mountain State Range ? a shooting range in Danbury ? said two ATF agents visited the range Friday night and stayed into the early morning looking through thousands of names on sign-in logs.

He said that he had never seen Adam or Nancy Lanza there and that agents told him they did not find their names on the sign-in sheets.

Law enforcement officials have said they have found no note or manifesto from Lanza of the sort they have come to expect after murderous rampages such as the Virginia Tech bloodbath in 2007 that left 33 people dead.

Education officials said they had found no link between Lanza's mother and the school, contrary to news reports that said she was a teacher there. Investigators said they believe Adam Lanza attended Sandy Hook many years ago, but they had no explanation for why he went there Friday.

Authorities said Adam Lanza had no criminal history, and it was not clear whether he had a job. Lanza was believed to have suffered from a personality disorder, said a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Another law enforcement official, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said Lanza had been diagnosed with Asperger's, a mild form of autism often characterized by social awkwardness.

People with the disorder are often highly intelligent. While they can become frustrated more easily, there is no evidence of a link between Asperger's and violent behavior, experts say.

The law enforcement officials insisted on anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the unfolding investigation.

Richard Novia, the school district's head of security until 2008, who also served as adviser for the school technology club, of which Lanza was a member, said he clearly "had some disabilities."

"If that boy would've burned himself, he would not have known it or felt it physically," Novia said in a phone interview. "It was my job to pay close attention to that."

Amid the confusion and sorrow, stories of heroism emerged, including an account of Hochsprung, 47, and the school psychologist, Mary Sherlach, 56, rushing toward Lanza in an attempt to stop him. Both died.

There was also 27-year-old teacher Victoria Soto, whose name has been invoked as a portrait of selflessness. Investigators told relatives she was killed while shielding her first-graders from danger. She reportedly hid some students in a bathroom or closet, ensuring they were safe, a cousin, Jim Wiltsie, told ABC News.

"She put those children first. That's all she ever talked about," a friend, Andrea Crowell, told The Associated Press. "She wanted to do her best for them, to teach them something new every day."

There was also 6-year-old Emilie Parker, whose grieving father, Robbie, talked to reporters not long after police released the names of the victims but expressed no animosity, offering sympathy for Lanza's family.

"I can't imagine how hard this experience must be for you," he said.

(AP) ? Skip Holtz wasn't without a head coaching job for long.

He was introduced as Louisiana Tech's new coach Friday, less than two weeks after he was fired by South Florida .

Holtz replaces Sonny Dykes, who left to accept the head coaching job at California last week. Louisiana Tech went 9-3 under Dykes this season, with a potent offense that averaged 51 points and 578 yards per game, but was surprisingly left without a bowl bid after balking at an early invitation to the Independence Bowl.

"I am tremendously excited for the opportunity to build on what coach Dykes started and to lead this great team forward," Holtz said. "This is a football program with outstanding student athletes, a history of winning and optimism in the future."

The 48-year-old Holtz is the son of Hall of Fame coach Lou Holtz, who is known most for his long and successful stint at Notre Dame.

The younger Holtz is coming off a 3-9 2012 campaign at South Florida, where he was 16-21 in three seasons.

Holtz is 88-71 overall in 13 seasons at Connecticut, East Carolina and USF. During Holtz's stint at East Carolina, the Pirates won back-to-back Conference USA titles in 2008 and 2009.

"I am extremely excited about the opportunity to have a coach of the caliber and experience of Skip Holtz leading our football program into the future," Louisiana Tech President Dan Reneau said. "The success he has had throughout his career as a head coach is solid and will offer a unique opportunity for our student-athletes to learn from one of the best."

Fernando Alonso says Ferrari needs to find loopholes in rules to beat Red Bull ? Formula 1 news

Ferrari?s Fernando Alonso has stated that his team needs to find loopholes in the FIA rules and regulations just like their rivals in order to win over Red Bull Racing.

?There were several incidents in which the other teams were at the limit, but not us. This has always happened and always will,? he told Italy?s La Gazzetta dello Sport. ?However, we too have to think within the confines of the rules while looking for some limits, some holes, like the other teams do in order to improve our performances.?

Alonso and Red Bull?s Sebastian Vettel remained in an intense fight for the championship towards the end of the 2012 F1 season but Red Bull also remained surrounded by controversies relating to breaking technical regulations of the FIA throughout the season. The Austrian team remained in a lot of pressure for using an illegal engine map during the German Grand Prix even though it was not proven that they broke any rule. However, FIA changed the technical regulations following the whole issue.

The team was also involved in controversy regarding a hole that they made in the car?s floor which according to FIA was illegal as it was giving them an aerodynamic advantage.

Red Bull?s chief technical officer, Adrian Newey, has confessed his frustration about being constantly under attack from the FIA and rival F1 teams. He told that the continuous rule changing by FIA is restricting F1 and actually the rules hold no spirit since they can still find loopholes in them. He added that while they were put under pressure, Ferrari was using similar solutions at some point in the season.

The end of the season saw Red Bull securing the third straight constructor title while Vettel became the youngest triple champion. Following the result of the Brazilian GP, Ferrari asked for a clarification of a particular overtake by Vettel during the race but were disappointed as the German was not found at any mistake.

Vettel has also mentioned about his rivals playing ?dirty tricks? but said that the team were more focused on themselves. He won by three points over Alonso.

Who's watching whom? Camera-equipped TV can be hacked, says researcher

3 hrs.

Security researchers have identified a vulnerability in Samsung?s Linux-based Smart TV software that could give a hacker near-complete access to the television. This includes any file on the television, any connected USB drive and, yes, the built-in camera and microphones found on the latest top-of-the-line LCD and plasma sets. In effect, this would allow a hacker to hear and see you as you're watching the TV.?

ReVuln,?a Malta-based?firm that specializes in "vulnerability research for offensive and defensive security,"?showed how it could hack the TVs remotely?from anywhere on the network where the TV itself?is installed.

On Dec. 8,?ReVuln posted a video showing the team accessing TV settings, channel lists, widgets, USB drives attached to the TV (and any personal files they contain) and?remote control configurations. As the video chillingly puts it, "We can install malicious software to gain complete root access to the TV."

ReVuln announced?the hack in email correspondence with the online journal?Security Ledger, which published the video.

If this all?sounds familiar, it's because?HD Guru identified the potential vulnerability?back in March following the launch of Samsung?s 2012 line-up.?(At that time, NBC News?ran this story?by HD Guru's Gary Merson.)

When asked about the exploit,?Samsung released this statement to NBC News:

Samsung takes the security of our products very seriously. We are currently investigating the matter and will take appropriate actions, to the extent necessary.

There are four Samsung Smart TV?series, 11 models total,?that have built-in mics and HD cameras: The plasma 8000 series with three models, a 7500 LED LCD series with three models, an 8000 LED LCD series with four models and the flagship 9000 LED LCD, which currently has one model.

For independent verification of the claims, NBC News turned to Black Hat, which hosts global conferences to address highly technical security?matters. "These researchers are a known entity,"?Trey Ford, general manager of the group,?told NBC News. "I respect and believe what they present in the video. It is a credible threat."

What's?the worst that could happen?
When?NBC News reached out to ReVuln, Luigi Auriemma, the firm's co-founder, explained the significance of?his firm's discovery.?

"The vulnerability is exploitable remotely via network so the attacker needs to reach the TV IP address," he wrote to NBC News in an email from Malta. This distinction means that it's different than a worm or virus, that could spread to the TV via the Internet.

"In our opinion it's more interesting and realistic to think about attacks [against] specific targets reached via open/weak/hacked Wi-Fi or compromised computers of a network, instead of mass-exploiting via the Internet," wrote Auriemma. "That's interesting due to the effects of the vulnerability (retrieving information and the possibility of monitoring) which are perfect for targeted attacks, from a specific person with a TV at home to a company with TVs in its offices."

As disturbing as the concept of a "targeted attack" sounds, this means that there are limitations to who can get at you via a smart TV.?

"Where do you have to be to attack? Over the Internet from China? Or on my local network?" asks Ford of the Black Hat organization. "I don't believe this is exploitable from anywhere but the local network. Judging from the video, they have to be on the local network on Wi-Fi or plugged in (via Ethernet)."

The reason is that a router, like the one you have in your home, is the only part of your network visible to the Internet at large. Every computer, phone, game console or, yes, smart TV, attached to that router gets a local address, one that is unknown ? and therefore unexploitable ? from the outside. There are situations where devices connected to the router can be seen ? for instance, when a PC is hosting a Web page ? but aren't?typical household configurations.

Keep?out of my TV
If you just bought a smart TV, don't panic. Instead, make sure your home set-up is properly secured by following these steps recommended by the security experts.

For starters, remember: "Your network is your personal responsibility," says Travis Carelock, Black Hat's content director and research technologist. Black Hat recommends you ensure that your router's wireless network is secured with WPA encryption (not?WEP, which can be cracked), and that you keep track of what devices have access to?your network.

"Consider that little kid next?door that's good with computers," says Ford. Even if someone doesn't have malicious intent, they may be accessing your network.

Next, "update, update, update," says Carelock. Just as you update your home computer and Web?browsers to prevent security breaches, so must you now update your TVs and other connected electronics. It's what Black Hat calls "safe computing hygiene."

Another thing you can do is put some tape over the camera when it's not in use. "A physical layer of defense is always the best defense," says Carelock.

The?future is an open network
Even if you can keep your household secure, "we're moving into a whole different world," says Ford. "Growing up, you and I didn't have a wirelessly connected camera pointing at the couch."

And while the safeguards against this sort of threat may be clear to security experts now, the next wave of Internet interactivity, known as IPv6, will bring a new set of concerns. Currently, devices?connected to a?router are?typically?invisible to devices on the open?Internet. But when every device that connects to the Internet gets its own IP address, the rules will change.?

"That's what will make this a whole lot more fun in the future," says Ford.
