Bats harbor many types of coronaviruses and were probably the original source of the new coronavirus that appeared in the Middle East.

On the surface, the new coronavirus detected in the Middle East this month looks quite similar to SARS. It apparently causes severe respiratory problems, and can be lethal.

But with viruses, the devil is in their details ? the genetic details.

Dutch virologists have just published the whole genome of the new coronavirus ? all 30,118 letters of its code. And, the sequence reveals that the mystery virus is most closely related to coronaviruses that infect bats in Southeast Asia.

In fact, the pathogen is more similar to two bat viruses than it is to the human SARS virus that sent the world into a panic when it infected nearly 8,000 people in 2003.

Virologist Ron Fouchier, who has done controversial work on bird flu viruses, led the sequencing effort of the SARS-like virus. He tells Shots the results suggest that the new coronavirus virus came from bats. "Bats harbor many coronaviruses, so it's logical to assume that bats are the natural reservoir" of the new pathogen, he says.

?

"But this doesn't mean the Saudi man contracted the virus from bats," says Fouchier.

When viruses jump from animals to humans, there's usually a second animal that connects the natural carrier with humans. This species is called the amplifier because it increases the number of viral particles that can hop over into people.

With SARS, Fouchier says, it probably started off in bats and then jumped into an exotic animal, such as a civet cat, before it made its way to people.

This type of infection trajectory fits with what epidemiologists have seen, so far, for the new coronavirus.

In the past few weeks, John Watson and his team at Britain's Health Protection Agency have tracked down about 60 people who recently came in contact with one of the men infected with the virus. "None of these contacts have become seriously ill or shown any sign of being infected with the virus," Watson tells Shots.

Plus, there's nothing special happening where the sick man lived, such as an uptick in cases of respiratory illnesses. This is strong evidence that the virus came from an animal and that it probably can't yet move between people.

But to know for sure, Watson says, scientists need to find more cases of the new virus.

The genome sequence will be a big help on this front. Fouchier and his team just published a diagnostic test for the new virus, which doctors around the world can use to verify suspected cases of the disease.

Fouchier says that the genome may also give clues to drugs that may be effective against the virus.

Companies can also begin to design vaccines for the virus, Fouchier adds. "There are experimental vaccines for SARS, and these could be updated to work on the virus," he says. "All knowledge that we built for SARS is not lost."

So what's he doing next? First, taking a few steps backward. "We still need proof that the virus is the cause of the disease," he says. "We are currently starting animal experiments with macaques and ferrets to show that this virus actually makes animals sick. Many viruses don't."

(AP) ? NFL officials on the verge of approving a new contract say they are excited to get back to work.

Officials arrived Friday at a Dallas-area hotel to discuss and vote on an eight-year agreement reached with the league late Wednesday. They were meeting Friday night with a vote on the contact expected Saturday morning. Some planned to fly directly after the vote to their assigned cities for Sunday's game.

The deal must be ratified by 51 percent of the union's 121 members.

The officials were expected to meet the media at 7 p.m. but the news conference was canceled.

Some said they thought Monday night's Packers-Seahawks game, which ended in chaos after a call in the end zone gave the Seahawks the winning touchdown instead of a Packers interception, provided the final push toward a settlement. Many fans commentators ? and players in the league ? thought the call was botched.

Monday night's call brought the three-week furor over replacement officials to a fevered pitch.

"It's all history now," head linesman Tom Stabile said. "For us, it was a benefit. It may have been the straw that broke the camel's back."

Line judge Jeff Bergman said he could see the play coming as he watched at home. He noticed that players were starting to take advantage of replacement officials struggling to keep control of the game.

"The last play of the game was something that was going to happen sooner or later," Bergman said. "It gave us and the league an opportunity to get together and hammer out a deal that was going to get hammered out anyway."

Referee Ed Hochuli, who led weekly tests and conference calls for officials to stay sharp during the lockout, declined to say whether the replacements made the right call.

"You really don't want to see that," Hochuli said. "You don't want to see the controversy. You don't want to see teams lose games that they shouldn't have lost, if indeed that's what happened. We're not making a judgment on that."

After three weeks of games marred by mistakes, the regular refs said they were heartened by the support they've received from fans, players and coaches ? even if they don't expect it to last very long now that they're back.

"You're not really beloved by the public. You're tolerated. And to see that type of reception that our guys got last night was really heartwarming," said Bergman, who will head to Green Bay for Sunday's game, one week after Packers players ripped the replacements for calling Monday's disputed play a touchdown.

"After the euphoria of the moment wears off, probably sometime early in the second quarter, it'll be back to regular NFL football mode," Bergman said. "Players will be questioning our judgment, our ancestry. Coaches will be screaming at us. And it'll be life as back to normal on Sundays."

One crew returned to work Thursday night. Cheered from the moment they walked onto the field, the men in stripes ran a smooth and efficient game as the NFL's lockout of officials came to an end with the Baltimore Ravens' 23-16 win over the Browns.

"To just be applauded by 50,000 people prior to anything happening, it was something that kind of chokes you up," referee Gene Steratore said. "It was a very special feeling."

First two James Webb Space Telescope flight mirrors delivered to NASA

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? The first two of the 18 primary mirrors to fly aboard NASA's James Webb Space Telescope arrived at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

The mirrors are going through receiving and inspection and will then be stored in the Goddard cleanroom until engineers are ready to assemble them onto the telescope's backplane structure that will support them.

Ball Aerospace, Boulder, Colo., under contract to Northrop Grumman, is responsible for the Webb's optical technology and lightweight mirror system. On September 17, 2012, Ball Aerospace shipped the first two mirrors in custom containers designed specifically for the multiple trips the mirrors made through eight U.S. states while completing their manufacturing. The remaining 16 mirrors will make their way from Ball Aerospace to Goddard over the next 12 months as they await telescope integration in 2015.

"These first two completed flight mirror assemblies arriving at Goddard are an important first step leading towards the integration of the mirrors onto the flight structure," said Lee Feinberg, NASA Optical Telescope Element Manager for the James Webb Space Telescope at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. "These delivered flight mirrors meet their requirements, which is great news for Webb telescope being able to fulfill its scientific potential."

One of the Webb's science goals is to look back through time to when galaxies were young. To see such far-off and faint objects, Webb needs a large mirror. A telescope's sensitivity, or how much detail it can see, is directly related to the size of the mirror area that collects light from the objects being observed. A larger area collects more light, just like a larger bucket collects more water in a rain shower than a small one.

Webb's scientists and engineers determined that a primary mirror 6.5 meters (21 feet 4 inches) across is what was needed to measure the light from these distant galaxies. Each of the 18 hexagonal-shaped mirror assemblies that make up the primary mirror measures more than 1.3 meters (4.2 feet) across, and weighs approximately 40 kilograms, or 88 pounds.

The Webb will be the first space astronomy observatory to use an actively-controlled, segmented mirror. The Webb is critical for future infrared observations. The Webb will be the premier observatory of the next decade. It will study every phase in the history of our universe, ranging from the first luminous glows after the Big Bang, to the formation of stellar systems capable of supporting life on planets like Earth, to the evolution of our own Solar System. It is a joint project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency.

Judge exonerates former LA gang member of murder

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A courtroom erupted in applause, cheers and shouts of "We love you" as a former gang member imprisoned for 19 years for a murder he didn't commit was exonerated and set free Monday.

John Edward Smith, who was still in jail clothing when he appeared in court, smiled broadly, acknowledging his excited family and friends.

Adding to the Hollywood-style courtroom drama, those applauding for Smith included pop star Chris Brown, who was in the same courtroom for his probation hearing involving the 2009 beating of his then-girlfriend Rihanna.

Outside court, Smith's lawyer Deirdre O'Connor said Brown shook her hand and congratulated her.

"Thank you for your enthusiasm," Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg told the crowd as she vacated Smith's convictions for murder and attempted murder in a gang-related drive-by shooting. Prosecutors told her they were convinced that the lone eyewitness to the 1993 incident had lied at Smith's trial, naming him as the shooter. Smith always maintained he was at his grandmother's house when the shooting occurred several blocks away.

"Thank you for the opportunity to do justice," the judge told lawyers for both sides after she announced her ruling.

Smith, wearing glasses and a tan striped polo shirt, was released from a Los Angeles County jail at about 8:30 p.m. He was greeted by a host of TV cameras.

"I had good days and bad days, I stayed hopeful and that's all I could do," he told the media gathered outside the downtown jail. "I'm not bitter at all, because that ain't going to get me nowhere. I've got to move on."

He said he was looking forward to "going home and seeing my grandmother," who raised him. Family members drove him to her house, which she had mortgaged to pay for his initial defense, O'Connor said.

The grandmother, 79-year-old Laura Neal, used a walker to attend the hearing earlier in the day, and wept when Schnegg announced her decision.

"I always knew he didn't do it," Neal told reporters after court. "I'm happy and sad. But the part of me that was in there with him ? I'm free now too."

She said it was difficult to wait through the weekend after Smith's hearing was delayed Friday.

"It was hell," Neal said. "Friday was a big disappointment."

Smith's lawyer, O'Connor, explained, "The closer you get to freedom, the harder it is to wait another day."

The 37-year-old Smith was 18 when he went to prison. He maintained he was at his grandmother's house with family when the shooting took place Sept. 9, 1993, in a gang-infested area.

He said he knew nothing about the crime until his mother called to tell him about it.

The only eyewitness ? a victim who was shot and survived ? said police pressured him to identify Smith as the shooter.

Prosecutors told the judge they now believe he lied, and Schnegg found the conviction was based on perjured testimony.

Smith's exoneration was pursued by Innocence Matters, a public interest law firm in Torrance.

The eyewitness, Landu Mvuemba, met with Innocence Matters representatives in 2010 and immediately blurted out that he had lied at the trial, said O'Connor, who heads the group.

"Within the first two minutes of the interview, Mvuemba recanted," O'Connor said. Mvuemba was 16 at the time of the shooting.

He told representatives of Innocence Matters, "The police told me they knew who did it," a defense motion stated.

O'Connor said Smith wept when she called him with the news about Mvuemba. "He said, 'Why did he do it? Why did he lie?'" O'Connor recalled.

Mvuemba said police pointed to Smith, whom he had known in elementary school, and told him other witnesses had identified Smith as the shooter. Mvuemba said he also was shown a photo of his friend DeAnthony Williams, who died in the shooting.

"I felt a lot of pressure to go along with it," Mvuemba said.

The two victims had been on the street examining the scene of another shooting the night before when a car pulled up and someone opened fire.

Mvuemba said he tried three times to tell authorities that he didn't see enough to testify, but his pleas were ignored.

"Mvuemba knew it was wrong to identify Mr. Smith as the man who shot him," according to the defense motion. "But when he saw his deceased friend's crying mother in the courtroom, he felt as if he had no other choice."

Mvuemba is currently imprisoned on a rape conviction.

Judge Schnegg said she held many meetings with the defense and prosecution in the year since the recanting was disclosed.

She told Smith in court: "You had a very committed attorney, and you had a prosecution team that did the right thing."

Schnegg also said lacked sufficient information to declare Smith factually innocent, but she vacated his convictions for murder and attempted murder, and ordered him released.

O'Connor said Smith's trial was undermined by ineffective assistance of attorneys who failed to investigate the case properly at trial and on appeal. She said lawyers and police often take "shortcuts" in gang cases.

"Mr. Smith was not the shooter," the motion said. "He was not at the scene of the crime."

Smith's sister, Tiana Goodman, 25, said he would be meeting nieces and nephews who were born while he was in prison.

"This is a big day for our family," she said, tears running down her cheeks. "He kept his faith and never gave up."

Gangnam Style Becomes Most-Liked Video of All Time

South Korean sensation PSY and his viral video smash “Gangnam Style” have danced, rapped and ridden straight into the Guinness Book of World Records.

PSY’s video has been liked 2,234,641 times on YouTube, an all-time high, annihilating the prior record of 1,575,979, set by LMFAO’S “Party Rock Anthem.”

All in a mere three months after “Gangnam Style” was released.

Heeeeeey sexy laaaaaady! Bow down to PSY and his fake horse.

As for the all-time most watched YouTube video, PSY's got a ways to go before he catches Justin Bieber and his 780,683,863 views. "Baby," that's a lot.

“Gangnam Style” has a modest 230,549,340. So far.

Whether he breaks that mark or not, PSY already left his mark on pop culture, thanks to the Britney Spears Gangnam Style dance on Ellen. Enough said.

Romney jumpstarts campaign in battleground states

MIAMI (Reuters) - With seven weeks to go before the November election, Mitt Romney is ramping up his efforts in battleground states as he tries to move past one of the most difficult stretches in his Republican presidential campaign.

During a week in which his campaign has faced reports of infighting and a potentially damaging secretly recorded video came to light, Romney has mostly appeared at fundraising events in states that are not in doubt - Democratic-heavy California and the Republican stronghold of Texas.

That will soon change as Romney increases his planned appearances in swing states like Ohio, Virginia and Florida, the second change in a week to a campaign that has been jolted. Romney's team announced an earlier reset in which he promised to spend more time in his speeches talking about the specifics of policy proposals.

Polls show a close race although President Barack Obama's narrow lead has grown slightly as they head into the final lap to the November 6 election.

Republicans say the former governor of Massachusetts has to act quickly to avoid slipping further behind in polls and some have complained that Romney did not appear to be campaigning enough.

"The Romney campaign is being out-hustled and the president's campaign is getting away with this argument that the economy is better off than it was four years ago," said a veteran Republican strategist who has worked on several presidential campaigns.

Under the new push to campaign more, Romney will hold three public events a day, which in most election years is a normal pace in the run up to election day but for him it will be a big increase.

As part of the stepped-up schedule, Romney will participate in a three-day bus tour of Ohio next week with his vice presidential running mate, Paul Ryan.

Campaign aides say Romney has had to spend an inordinate amount of time fund-raising to keep dollars flowing.

It would be difficult for Romney to win the White House without victory in Ohio and Florida, and both states represent challenges. The unemployment rate in the Midwestern state of Ohio is better than the national average of 8.1 percent.

As Romney struggled to stabilize his White House bid, former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty stepped down from his role as a top supporter of Romney's to become a leading Washington lobbyist for Wall Street banks.

FLORIDA SHOWDOWN

And in retiree-heavy Florida, Romney faces headwinds over a plan championed by his vice presidential running mate, Paul Ryan, to change the Medicare health insurance plan for seniors.

A Ryan budget blueprint would save money by changing the way Medicare works. It has given Democrats a line of attack against the Republican ticket.

On Thursday in Sarasota, Romney will seek to reassure seniors that his budget-cutting proposals would not affect their retirement benefits.

Obama will be in Florida as well to give an interview to the Spanish-language television network Univision, just as Romney did on Wednesday.

A new Romney TV ad features Florida Republican Senator Marco Rubio.

"We can save Medicare" without changing seniors' plans, he said in the ad. "But only if younger Americans accept that our Medicare will be different than our parents' when we retire in thirty years. But after all they did for us, isn't that the least we can do?"

Romney wants the election to be a referendum on Obama's handling of the weak U.S. economy, but self-inflicted wounds have sidetracked him this week. A video that surfaced on Monday suggested he was writing off Obama supporters as people dependent on government with no sense of personal responsibility.

"My campaign is about the 100 percent in America and I'm concerned about them," Romney told Univision.

"I'm concerned about the fact that over the past four years life has become harder for Americans. More people have fallen into poverty, more people we just learned have had to go onto food stamps," he added.

Some 43 percent of registered voters thought less of Romney after seeing the video, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll, while a mostly Republican 26 percent viewed him more favorably. Independent voters were more likely to say the video lowered their opinion of Romney.

Will Earth Run Out of Plants?

Humans may be very close to extracting all of the Earth's available plant resources, says a University of Montana researcher.

In fact, said Steven Running, a professor in the university's College of Forestry and Conservation, humanity may realistically have only 10 percent or so of our planet's annual plant resources in reserve, with little ability to boost yearly growth. The calculations don't suggest that humanity is on the verge of starvation, Running said, but they do indicate there are limits to our species' growth.

"Economic logic just seems to be about endless growth with no limits," Running told LiveScience. "And this is my attempt to say that on the planet we at least have some biophysical limits, and here's one."

Boundaries to growth

The concept of resource-imposed limits to growth, or "planetary boundaries" first came up in the 1970s with the book "Limits to Growth" (Club of Rome, 1972). The authors of that book modeled the planet's productivity and predicted that population and economic growth would run up against basic resource scarcity sometime around 2030. The calculations were somewhat primitive, Running said. The methodology and findings of the modeling were criticized, though researchers have recently revisited the predictions and found them to be relatively accurate. One 2011 analysis, published in book form by SpringerBriefs in Energy found that "reality seems to be closely following the curves that the [Limits to Growth] scenarios had generated."

Climate change and other environmental concerns have prompted scientists to revisit the idea of planetary boundaries, Running said. Likewise, he said, environmental policy-makers have become more interested in whether those boundaries can be defined. Researchers have suggested that important boundaries might include climate change, ocean acidification, land-use change and loss of species. [Top 10 Ways to Destroy Earth]

A new line

In an editorial in the journal Science to be published Friday (Sept. 21), Running suggests a new measure: terrestrial net primary plant production. This mouthful merely refers to the globe's land plant growth in a year. Humans depend on plant life for food, building materials, firewood and bioenergy and grazing land for livestock.

Thanks to satellite measurements, researchers can now calculate how much vegetation the Earth produces each year. Over 30 years of observation, Running said, the number has stayed remarkably stable at 53.6 petagrams (one petagram is one trillion kilograms, or about 2.2 trillion pounds).

That's a lot of greenery. But humans use about 40 percent of it annually, Running said. The number would seem to offer plenty of wiggle room for humanity, but in fact, only about 10 percent of the remaining vegetation is up for grabs, he said.

"What we've found is that the vast majority of that other 60 percent isn't available at all," he said. It's either locked up in root systems and unharvestable, conserved in national parks or wilderness areas crucial for biodiversity, or simply in far Siberia or the middle of the Amazon, where there are no roads and no way to harvest it.

"If humans are appropriating about 40 percent of annual production, if another 50 percent we can't harvest and appropriate, then that only leaves about 10 percent," Running said. "Well, that starts to sound a lot closer to a planetary boundary."

The boundary debate

There are arguments against this imminent vegetal limit, Running said: It's arguably possible that humanity could increase plant production with fertilizer or irrigation (though both of those are also in limited supply and have downsides such as pollution), or that we could construct more roads into the Amazon to avail ourselves of more natural resources. But a large enough boost to make a significant difference would have to number in the tens of percentage points, Running said, which seems unlikely. [10 Most Pristine Places on Earth]

"And again, you would question how far that would go and whether that's a planet we want, where every single acre from wall to wall has been completely harvested and is in some sort of controlled annual plant production cycle," he said.

The findings are also an argument against hoping the biofuels will solve the planet's energy woes. Running calculated that if humans turned every bit of the last 10 percent of available plant production to bioenergy, it would only cover 40 percent of current energy needs.

"Endless economic growth and endless consumptive growth of the planet just can't happen," Running said. "And that the sooner we start getting realistic expectations for the future, the better we can manage ourselves to effectively use the planetary resources in a sustainable way."

No comments - Educational Developers Caucus Resource Review

Reviewed by:? Alison Downie, Indiana University of Pennsylvania

The second edition of The Adjunct Faculty Handbook (the first edition appeared in 1996), is a timely, valuable reference resource in the literature of higher education.? The new editors have retained the essential purpose, audience, format, and organization of?the first edition while updating content to address the current climate.

As the Preface to the second edition points out, adjunct instructors constitute 50% to 70% of all teaching faculty in the United States (xi).? The seven chapters reflect this significance for higher education, presenting a range of information which will be useful to teaching faculty, administrators, and directors of centers for teaching excellence. As with the first edition?s eleven chapters, the chapters of the second edition are independent.? Since they are written by different authors, there is some content overlap, yet this is never mere repetition. A helpful feature retained from the first edition is the brief synopsis of content and relevance for particular audiences on the first page of each chapter. The first chapter treats nuts and bolts administrative details for those new to the university environment, and chapter two gives a thorough overview of technology in the classroom.? Two chapters presenting learning-centered pedagogy will be helpful to any teaching faculty and the chapter on evaluating student work will be especially helpful to new teachers.? Chapters five and seven provide excellent strategies on pressing needs regarding professional development and network technologies for support, especially for online instructors.

A helpful new feature of the second edition is inclusion of five appendices which will be useful for new teachers and all those supporting them. Of? particular note is Appendix E, ?Suggested Readings and/or Web Site URLs,? a concise resource list featuring links to outstanding university centers for teaching excellence, which is helpful for any teacher wishing to revise or update teaching strategies. ?

Most significantly, the second edition provides up to date scholarship and practical information, particularly on the theme of technology in relation to teaching and learning.

F-Secure Anti-Virus 2013

By Neil J. Rubenking

Some people love getting extras. An antivirus with tons of bonus features like spam filtering and firewall protection makes them utterly happy. Others prefer to focus on the essential task at hand. For that latter group, F-Secure Anti-Virus 2013 ($39.99 direct for three licenses) totally fills the bill. It sticks to cleaning up malware infestations, blocking new malware attacks, and watching for suspicious behavior by as-yet-unknown threats.

At first glance, the product looks almost identical to the 2012 edition. In fact, there have been a lot of changes. F-Secure's designers carefully scrutinized every configuration setting. If the average user would never need a particular setting, they simply removed it. For others, they changed the wording to favor simple language over technical jargon. Given that the vast majority of computer users are not security experts, this change makes a lot of sense.

Easy Install
Recently I've had some real challenges getting antivirus protection installed on my twelve malware-infested test systems. AVG Anti-Virus FREE 2013 and Trend Micro Titanium Antivirus+ 2013 were particularly challenging and required a lot of back-and-forth with tech support.

F-Secure installed completely without incident on nine of my test systems. The product wouldn't install in Safe Mode, so for the test system that only works in Safe Mode tech support recommended the new, remodeled Easy Clean tool to clean up the malware that made it impossible to boot into normal Windows.

The new Easy Clean relies on the cloud for signatures, so it's a tiny download. However, it got stuck trying to fix this particular system, so I scanned with F-Secure's Rescue-CD instead. On two systems, malware actively interferes with any connection to known security-vendor websites, which prevented the F-Secure installer from downloading the latest components. Rescue CD also got those two into a state that allowed full installation. Easy!

I should mention that the Rescue CD's text-only user interface is reminiscent of the early IBM PC. It isn't beautiful, but the instructions are easy enough to follow, and it certainly did the job.
